Michael Nelson

Michael directs divisional programs including: Alert and Warning, Search and Rescue, Interoperability and Communications, Logistics, Private Partner programs, Crisis Management Information Systems, and Information Analysis and Dissemination.  Additionally, he supervises and coordinates preparedness, training and response actions for the Virginia Emergency Operations Center (VEOC) and the Virginia Emergency Response Team (VERT). 

Positions Held

Prior to joining VDEM, Michael completed a 20 year career in the United States Navy as a Naval Flight Officer in the E-2C Hawkeye. He concluded his Navy career planning and coordinating Combat Air Operations during the early months of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Personal Info
Michael is a graduate of the University of West Florida, with a Bachelors in Marine Biology, Auburn University at Montgomery with a Masters in Public Administration and the Commonwealth Management Institute (CMI). His military education includes Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) and Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC).
