  • The shelter at Kings Fork High School in Suffolk closed as of 10:00 A.M. on April 30. As of 9:30 a.m. on April 30, all roads are now open. All schools opened as of May 1.

  • A Disaster Response Center to help people affected by the tornadoes and severe storms that struck April 28 opens at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, May 1) in the Suffolk City Recreation Center located at Kings Fork Middle School, 350 Kings Fork Road in the city of Suffolk.

  • The National Weather Service has stated that the tornado that hit Suffolk has preliminarily been rated a strong EF3 tornado with winds reaching a maximum of 160 miles per hour.

  • A 4-person Incident Management Team from Fairfax has been dispatched to Suffolk.

04.29.08, 9:50 a.m.

  • Dogs East, K-9 Alert and Greater Atlantic Rescue Dogs are sending search dogs to Suffolk.
  • Civil Air Patrol flying two missions this morning. The first will provide National Weather Service, VDEM regional coordinator and local officials with overflight. The second will include digital imagery equipment to be used for mapping damaged areas.

  • 145 homes in Suffolk have been deemed uninhabitable.
  • One shelter is open with number of shelterees fluctuating from 35 to 75.
