WISE, VA. – Disaster assistance for Buchanan County has been expanded to include Emergency Food Stamps. The Virginia Department of Social Services received waivers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to issue the stamps to those whose homes or belongings were damaged or destroyed, or who lost income, food or money due to the floods.

Current food stamp recipients and others in the effected areas of Buchanan County can apply at the local Social Services office (Rt. 83 – Slate Creek). Applications for Emergency Food Stamps will be accepted May 13 thru May 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Transportation will be provided by Four County Transit; call (276) 963-1486 or 1-888-656-2272 if you need transportation. Citizens should monitor local radio stations WNRG and WMJD for transportation schedules.

Eligibility for emergency food stamps is based on available income minus non-reimbursed disaster-related expenses. Individuals applying for help need to provide proof of identity.

For additional information about applying for emergency food stamps, contact the Buchanan County Social Services Office (276) 935-8106.
