G290 – Public Information Officer

This two day course is designed for the new or less experienced Public Information Officer (PIO) and focuses on essential emergency PIO functions. The course will teach PIOs how to write a news release, conduct an on-camera interview and prepare awareness campaigns. The class is a prerequisite for the Advanced Public Information Course (E388) at the Emergency Management Institute.

Location: Rockingham Fire and Rescue Training Room, 20 East Gay Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22802

Prerequisites: IS-29 Public Information Officer Awareness Training. Students are required to bring laptops for this course.

Purpose: This course will consider the value of communication before, during and after an incident. It will help PIOs identify critical audiences, both internal and external.

Target Audience: The primary audience for this training is individuals who have public information responsibilities as their main job or as an auxiliary function at the federal, state, local, tribal or territorial level of government, and in the private and nongovernmental sectors.
