FEMA AUTHORIZES FEDERAL FUNDS TO HELP BATTLE VIRGINIA WILDFIRES
PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help the commonwealth of Virginia fight the Smith Fire in Warren County and the Coffman Fire in Rockingham County.
This authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire. Eligible costs can include equipment and supplies (less insurance proceeds) and costs for emergency work such as evacuations and sheltering, police barricading and traffic control.
“Our compassion and support go out to the residents and first responders of both Warren and Rockingham Counties,” said FEMA Region III Administrator MaryAnn Tierney. “This grant program will assist the commonwealth in its efforts to protect life and property.”
The fires named above started on February 19, 2011, threatening residential homes, outbuildings, infrastructure, utilities, equipment, and recreation areas. To date, the fires have burned in excess of 3,100 acres of state and private land in and around Warren and Rockingham Counties, which total a combined population of 2,324 people, with 240 residents directly impacted.
The President’s Disaster Relief Fund provides funding for federal fire management grants made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible firefighting costs, covered by the grant, must meet a minimum threshold for costs before delivery of assistance. Eligible costs covered by the aid can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.

Virginia Disaster Relief Fund
How is the money distributed?
Fund proceeds will be distributed to local long-term recovery groups, members of the Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and other non-profit and faith-based organizations as a grant.
Many of these groups work directly with individuals and families following a disaster.

The Virginia Disaster Relief Fund benefits projects that include: repair or rebuilding of underinsured dwellings, transportation assistance, replacing essential household items, helping renters establish new rental residence, temporary living expenses while recovering from loss, and more.
