Governor Warner Declares State of Emergency for Roanoke County Tire Fire

RICHMOND — Governor Mark R. Warner today declared a state of emergency, in response to a request by Roanoke County. An illegal tire dump in the county is on fire, with an estimated three million tires currently burning across 145 acres. Heavy smoke and potential petroleum runoff are posing a threat to nearby residents and the environment.

This state of emergency opens all the resources of state government to assist with the response to this fire, including the possible use of mandatory evacuations if needed to protect the life and property of citizens. The declaration also authorizes the deployment of the National Guard if necessary.

The Virginia departments of Emergency Management, Environmental Quality, Forestry, State Police, and Transportation have been assisting with the response since the fire broke out yesterday. The National Park Service is also fighting the fire, and the Environmental Protection Agency has activated a regional response team.
