CERTIFICATE of RECOGNITION
By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
EARTHQUAKE SHAKEOUT DAY
WHEREAS, damaging earthquakes pose a continuing threat to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, on August 23, 2011, a historic 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Louisa County, which caused extensive damage in Virginia and was felt in the surrounding area, and along the eastern seaboard; and
WHEREAS, community resiliency depends on the preparedness levels of members of the community; and
WHEREAS, when individuals, families, schools, organizations, businesses, and government come together to take actions to prepare for earthquakes, everyone’s safety improves; and
WHEREAS, on October 16, 2014, at 10:16 a.m., Virginia joins other states and countries from around the world in a ShakeOut – a simultaneous, multi-state earthquake drill; and
WHEREAS, the Great SouthEast ShakeOut provides Virginians with the information necessary to learn about how to protect life and property during an earthquake; and
WHEREAS, individuals, families, schools, businesses and organizations are encouraged to gather information at readyvirginia.gov;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 16, 2014, as EARTHQUAKE SHAKEOUT DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

Virginia Disaster Relief Fund
How is the money distributed?
Fund proceeds will be distributed to local long-term recovery groups, members of the Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and other non-profit and faith-based organizations as a grant.
Many of these groups work directly with individuals and families following a disaster.
How else can I donate?
The Virginia Disaster Relief Fund benefits projects that include: repair or rebuilding of underinsured dwellings, transportation assistance, replacing essential household items, helping renters establish new rental residence, temporary living expenses while recovering from loss, and more.
