Veteran Virginia government communicator Jeff Caldwell joined VDEM as Director of External Affairs and Chief Agency Spokesperson in February 2017. Caldwell previously served as press secretary to former Governor Bob McDonnell and communications director for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). He is an adjunct professor of public relations at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture. Caldwell also has extensive experience in corporate communications with Circuit City Stores, Inc. and Altria.
He provides strategic direction for VDEM’s all-hazards preparedness communications, shares stories about the hard work VDEM staff do around the state coordinating state emergency resources with local governments and first responders, oversees emergency communications during Virginia natural and man-made disasters, and leads VDEM’s policy and legislative outreach.
Caldwell earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Richmond. He is a graduate of the Virginia Executive Institute, is a licensed real estate salesperson in Virginia, and has won multiple state and national awards from the Virginia Press Association, VDOT and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
