Governor Gilmore Announces Presidential Approval of Emergency Declaration for Arlington Terrorist Attack
RICHMOND - Governor Jim Gilmore announced today that President Bush has granted an emergency declaration for the Commonwealth of Virginia to assist in recovery efforts for the terrorist attack at the Pentagon in Arlington County.
"As the United States deals with this crime of unprecedented magnitude, we in state government are working hard to ensure that those who were impacted by the attack on Virginia soil receive the help they need," said Governor Gilmore. "This federal emergency declaration will provide us with valuable resources to deal with immediate response needs for the safety and security of Virginia citizens - particularly in Arlington County."
This emergency declaration will make federal assistance available to support costs of emergency protective measures and debris clearance undertaken by state and local governments. It will also provide for direct assistance from federal agencies.
In addition to ongoing emergency response and recovery efforts, federal, state and local officials will be initiating assessment activities to determine the full scope of federal assistance to be provided in response to this incident.
