Commonwealth completes more than $985,000 in flood mitigation projects

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) closed out seven projects intended to educate the public about flood hazards, mitigate future flood damages to properties, and plan for and reduce hazard risks to communities across the commonwealth. The more than $985,000 in grant funds were part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Grant recipients were awarded these funds following the November 2009 nor’easter that caused widespread damage along the east coast, including localized flooding in some coastal areas of Virginia. Participation in any FEMA funded mitigation grant is voluntary on the part of the communities and homeowners.
