Virginia Flood Victims Can Apply For Assistance by Calling FEMA'S Toll-Free Registration Number
RICHMOND, VA -- A special toll-free telephone number is in operation for people affected by Hurricane Fran and subsequent flooding. The number can be used to register for a wide range of state, federal and voluntary disaster assistance programs, according to federal and state officials.
Robert Gunter, federal coordinating officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and A. E. Slayton, Jr., state coordinating officer for the Virginia Department of Emergency Services, said those affected by the hurricane may apply for assistance immediately by calling the toll-free number 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week at 1-800-462-9029. Hearing or speech-impaired persons may call TTY 1-800-462-7585.
FEMA/state damage assessment teams continue to survey the effects of Hurricane Fran throughout various jurisdictions.
