National Terrorism Advisory System

The Department of Homeland Security replaced color-coded alerts with the National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) in 2011.  The NTAS issues Bulletins and Alerts.

  • Bulletins: information about trends, events and potential threats.
  • Alerts: specific information, if available, about the nature of the threat, the geographic region, mode of transportation, target and protective measures.
  • See current advisories here.

Always be aware of your surroundings. Report suspicious activity to the Virginia Terrorism Hotline: 1-877-4VA-TIPS or 1-877-482-8477

If you see an advisory for your area, take these steps:

  • Stay calm.
  • Listen to local TV or radio for instructions.
  • Follow any protective actions recommended in the Bulletin or Alert.
  • Use your family emergency plan.

Be ready. Be willing to help.
