Hazardous Materials Training

Note: To register for Hazardous Materials Training courses, go to the Training Calendar.

The "Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Final Rule," published on March 6, 1996, made training a major priority for anyone who may be involved in a hazardous materials incident. As published in 29 CFR 1910.120, this legislation requires various levels of instruction and certification for a wide range of individuals.

VDEM has made hazmat training a priority for many years and is responsible for developing a statewide educational program. Emergency response personnel in the Commonwealth benefit from THD's integrated, multi-level training curriculum, which meets state and federal regulatory requirements along with nationally recognized standards.

Technological Hazards Division staff and adjunct instructors regularly travel throughout the state to deliver comprehensive training to meet the needs of fire and police department, emergency medical services and other agencies. Our cadre of adjunct instructors have undergone extensive training to assist individual localities in meeting specific educational requirements while reducing costs to both the Commonwealth and the locality.

VDEM's Technological Hazards Division is also available to assist with non-emergency hazmat instruction. This assistance includes working with Local Emergency Planning Committees on drills and providing guidance on planning exercises. With the support of the State Hazardous Material Emergency Response Advisory Committee, THD staff is continuously updating programs to ensure the training being delivered is state-of-the-art.
