FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWO WEEKS TO DISASTER ASSISTANCE
WISE, VA. – Only two weeks remain for Virginia residents and businesses affected by tornadoes, severe storms and flooding from April 28 through May 3 to register for disaster assistance.
July 5 is the application deadline for residents and businesses in Bedford, Buchanan, Campbell, Cumberland, Greensville, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Prince George, Prince Edward, Shenandoah, Scott, Tazewell and Wise counties and the independent cities of Bedford and Emporia. Those who have received U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan applications must also return them by this deadline.
Federal Coordinating Officer Louis Botta advises flood and tornado victims to call and register. “Even if you have insurance that covers some of the damage, please call and register with us,” he said. “We may be able to help in ways that insurance can’t.”
Renters, homeowners and businesses that suffered losses due to the disaster can register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362). The number is also available for those who have already registered and have further questions. A separate TTY number is available for the speech- or hearing- impaired: 1-800-462-7585. Both numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Individuals may be eligible for a variety of programs that cover temporary housing grants, minor home repairs, and other disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans from the SBA may also be available to cover losses of renters, homeowners and businesses not fully compensated by insurance.
Be ready. Be willing to help.
