Commonwealth receives more than $480,000 in pre-disaster planning grants

RICHMOND, Va. – Six regional planning district commissions will receive more than $480,000 from federal grants administered by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) to update hazards mitigation plans, a process which helps jurisdictions identify hazards and risks in their area and find mitigation opportunities to eliminate future risks.

VDEM received this funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the fiscal year 2015 Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program. Once received, the agency then awards funds for the eligible projects that were submitted by localities throughout the state as part of the grant process. The typical period of performance for these grants is two to three years.

Each regional planning district commission is responsible for 25 percent of the total grant’s eligible costs. The following have received funds through these grants:
