Community Emergency Response TeamChesapeake Volunteers

Trained CERT members fill a vital role in the moments immediately following an emergency before first responders arrive on scene.  Training involves basic disaster preparedness, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, triage and first aid, disaster psychology and terrorism awareness.  CERT members also support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community, both in spreading the word about preparedness and in assisting agencies during response operations.  Find CERT groups in your community.

CERT Spotlight:

For the past 25 years, the Human Resources Department has coordinated the Volunteer Reception Program to express gratitude towards those individuals who give their time and commitment to Chesapeake and its citizens. During Volunteer Week, we encourage departments to recognize their volunteers and a reception is held on the first floor of City Hall. On April 23,, 2013, all Chesapeake’s dignitaries gathered to congratulate Chesapeake’s volunteers. The Mayor read a proclamation in their honor and Council members and the City Manager shared some words of appreciation.

Does your community need to become CERT Ready? The best way to do that is by starting a CERT program in your city, town or county. Guidance for requesting the training you need is just a link away to the new CERT training Interest Survey!

Make your request for training courses via our Interest Survey at this link. Monthly review of the survey results will determine course demand, and appropriate class scheduling will be made available when interest reaches the required number of participants.
