Background Information

The commonwealth has been discussing and planning for next generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) for nearly a decade.

With significant advances in the technology and capabilities and functionality of a NG network, now is the time to move from planning to implementation.

The question is not if the commonwealth should deploy NG9-1-1, but rather, how the commonwealth should deploy NG9-1-1. The 9-1-1 Services Board adopted a plan to guide deployment statewide, butsince 9-1-1 is a local service, it is up to each locality to determine how they will move forward with NG9-1-1 deployment.

To aid localities in their NG9-1-1 decision, the 9-1-1 Services Board is recommending localities utilize the NG9-1-1 contract issued by Fairfax County.

ISP staff recently conducted town hall meetings throughout the commonwealth to discuss the NG9-1-1 Deployment Plan, the Fairfax County contract, and AT&T’s NG9-1-1 ESInet solution. Materials from these meetings, and additional materials requested by participants, are available below:

  • NG9-1-1 Deployment Plan – Board approved on Jan. 11, 2018
  • NG9-1-1 Planning Map – a map of PSAP boundaries, LATAs, ILECs, and selective routers
  • Fairfax County NG9-1-1 Contract – documents available from the Fairfax Department of Procurement and Material Management
  • Fairfax County NG9-1-1 Contract Fact Sheet – a high level summary of the Fairfax NG9-1-1 contract
  • NG9-1-1 Migration Presentation– generic powerpoint presentation for use by local government
