RICHMOND —The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) announced today the receipt of two awards of post-disaster funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). One award was received under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to address the impact of Hurricane Matthew, 2016, in various localities around the Commonwealth, and the second award resulted from unallocated Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) funding from the 2017 grant cycle for two projects in Essex County. These grant awards represent planning and structural solutions to reducing risks to vulnerable structures and infrastructure across Virginia.
“VDEM is committed to identifying, coordinating and securing all available funding that can assist localities and emergency response organizations to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the natural and man-made threats and disasters we face and experience in Virginia,” said State Coordinator of Emergency Management Jeff Stern.
VDEM administers these federal funds on behalf of FEMA. The state provides 20 percent matching funds for the HMGP projects which were awarded through a state competitive-grant process. The Commonwealth does not provide matching funds for PDM which is a nationally competitive grant program.
