Background Information

The commonwealth has been discussing and planning for next-generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) for nearly a decade.

With significant advances in the technology and capabilities and functionality of an NG network, now is the time to move from planning to implementation.

The question is not if the commonwealth should deploy NG9-1-1, but rather, how the commonwealth should deploy NG9-1-1. The 9-1-1 Services Board adopted a plan to guide deployment statewide, but since 9-1-1 is a local service, it is up to each locality to determine how they will move forward with NG9-1-1 deployment.

To aid localities in their NG9-1-1 decision, the 9-1-1 Services Board is recommending localities utilize the NG9-1-1 contract issued by Fairfax County.

ISP staff recently conducted town hall meetings throughout the commonwealth to discuss the NG9-1-1 Deployment Plan, the Fairfax County contract, and AT&T’s NG9-1-1 ESInet solution. Materials from these meetings, and additional materials requested by participants, are available below (in attachments).
