DESCRIPTION: A multi-day program of intense instruction and practice, focusing on the following subject areas: chemical and physical properties, detection and monitoring, protective equipment, decontamination, HAZMAT control, risk assessment, incident management, and safety. The program is in accordance with NFPA 472 and 29 CFR 1910.120 (q). This program includes intensive virtual classroom sessions and substantial practical exercises. It is a physically demanding course that requires students to work in self-contained breathing apparatus.
PREREQUISITES: Enrollment to this course is limited to 24 individuals. All applicants must have successfully completed the Hazardous Materials Operations course a minimum of 1 year prior to the start of class. All applicants must provide documentation of training through the Hazardous Materials Operations level. Training in self-contained breathing apparatus is required. First preference will be given to current members of COV Regional Hazardous Materials Response Teams. Each team will be allotted two student openings.
COST: For members of COV Regional Hazardous Materials Response Teams, lodging will be direct billed to VDEM. Meals will be on a reimbursement basis.
