RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) announced today the receipt of Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Awards received under this grant program help communities implement hazard mitigation measures following a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration. These awards will fund actions that reduce the risk of loss of life and property from future disasters.

“I am proud of the work VDEM does consistently to protect and support all communities across Virginia,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian J. Moran. “This funding from FEMA will bolster hazard mitigation in Newport News and defend against damage from future natural disasters.”

“This project for Newport News is a great example of innovative projects to reduce the long term risk to life and property,” said State Coordinator of Emergency Management, Curtis C Brown. “VDEM continues to look for equitable ways to prioritize grant funding.”

VDEM administers these federal funds on behalf of FEMA and the state may provide matching funds. The jurisdiction receiving funding through this grant is the City of Newport News.
