RICHMOND– As temperatures in the commonwealth get colder, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) encourage Virginians to prepare for the upcoming winter season. To help that effort, VDEM and NWS have teamed up to bring Winter Weather Awareness Week held Monday, November 29 – Friday, December 3.
Winter can bring dangerously low temperatures, power outages, and unpredictable road conditions. In February 2021, parts of Central Virginia saw their worst icing impacts in more than two decades.
During a winter storm, roads and walkways may become extremely dangerous or impassable, and access to critical community services may be limited. Preparing your home, vehicle, and family before a winter storm arrives is critical.
Winter Weather Awareness Week is a perfect time for families, communities, schools, and businesses to review their emergency plans, build or resupply their emergency kits, and learn about winter weather and how it impacts Virginia. VDEM and NWS will share winter weather preparedness information throughout the week via the web, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Each day will focus on a different topic.
Partner organizations and the media are encouraged to participate.
